Dypsis lutescens
The Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens) is one of the most popular indoor palms in the world. Its feathery, arching fronds create an instant tropical atmosphere, while its air-purifying qualities make it a favourite for living rooms and offices alike. Care Guide
Light
Place in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun which can scorch the fronds.
Watering
Water thoroughly once a week in summer, every 10–14 days in winter. Let the top inch of soil dry between waterings.
Humidity
Loves humidity. Mist regularly, use a pebble tray, or place near a humidifier.
Feeding
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer.
Repotting
Repot every 2 years in spring into a pot 2 inches larger with well-draining potting mix.
Brown leaf tips
Usually caused by low humidity or fluoride in tap water. Use filtered water and mist more often.
Yellow fronds
Overwatering is the most common cause. Check soil moisture before watering.
Leggy growth
Move to a brighter spot — the plant is reaching for more light.
