Helleborus orientalis
Hellebores are the true heroes of the winter garden. These hardy perennials produce exquisite nodding flowers in shades of deep plum, white, pink, and spotted varieties from midwinter through early spring — often pushing through snow. They thrive in shady spots where little else will grow and are virtually maintenance-free once established.

Care Guide
Planting
Plant in partial shade in moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost.
Watering
Water regularly until established. Mature plants are drought-tolerant.
Autumn tidy
Cut back old leaves in late autumn to reveal flower buds and reduce disease.
Mulching
Apply a layer of compost around the base in autumn to feed and protect roots.
Black leaf spot
Remove affected leaves promptly. Improve air circulation.
Failure to flower
Needs more shade or the plant is too young — hellebores take 2–3 years to flower well.
